On Monday, March 31, 2026, students enrolled in the International Communication course had the opportunity to engage directly with Mohd. Nur Najmi Bin Nuji, MIPR, APR, an academic from the Public Relations Department of Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Shah Alam, Malaysia, in the third guest lecture session held virtually via Zoom.

Mr. Najmi delivered a session titled “International Public Relations from Southeast Asia: Rethinking Global Communication Practices,” a topic that directly challenges dominant assumptions in global PR scholarship. He elaborated on how PR practices in Southeast Asia carry their own distinct characteristics, shaped by collectivist values, high-context communication, strong government influence, and a hybrid media landscape where traditional and digital platforms continue to coexist. The region, home to over 680 million people, has for too long been treated as an object of external study, when in fact it holds significant potential to generate theoretically relevant perspectives of its own.

Further into the session, Mr. Najmi presented findings from his research on the role of university students in public diplomacy, using the ASEAN-Malaysia Chairmanship 2025 as the primary case study. His findings revealed that students are not merely spectators in diplomatic processes, but active communicators capable of shaping discourse through strategic communication across social media and other informal channels. This was a particularly resonant reminder for Communication Studies students who are preparing to enter professional life.

The Coordinator of Communication Science UNJ, Dr. Dini Safitri, S.Sos., M.Si., CPR., expressed her feelings, “The program’s commitment to inviting guest lecturers from various countries demonstrates a spirit of collaboration that supports SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals. In this case, the International Communication course has invited a lecturer from Malaysia.”

Through this guest lecture drew high engagement from participants, with discussions ranging from how Western PR theories can be meaningfully adapted to the Indonesian context, to broader reflections on Southeast Asia’s evolving position in the global communication landscape.

Jakarta, May 13 2026 — Undergraduate of Communication Science UNJ once again brought international learning into its classroom.
