Jakarta, 25 September 2026<\/strong> \u2014 Undergraduate Communication Science students at Universitas Negeri Jakarta (UNJ) Class of 2024 explored the role of media in shaping public understanding of global issues through a guest lecture titled Global Issues in World Media<\/strong>. Held online via Zoom on 23 September 2026 as part of the Globalization Issue course, the lecture featured Abdul Razaque Chhachhar, Ph.D., Assistant Professor in the Department of Media and Communication Studies at the University of Sindh, Jamshoro, Pakistan<\/strong>. The session provided students with an opportunity to engage with an international academic perspective and examine global media issues beyond their regular classroom discussions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The guest lecture supported Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4, Quality Education, by providing students with access to international academic perspectives and opportunities for cross-border knowledge exchange. Through direct engagement with a scholar from an overseas university, students were encouraged to broaden their understanding of communication and global affairs while developing a more critical approach to the information they encounter in the media. This learning experience connected classroom discussions with perspectives from a different academic and media environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Under the theme Presenting Global Issues in World Media, Abdul Razaque discussed how international issues gain attention and meaning through media. He explained that global issues are matters whose causes or consequences extend beyond national boundaries, while their significance can be shaped by how they are communicated to the public. The lecture introduced students to key media concepts such as agenda-setting, framing, gatekeeping, and news values, helping them examine why certain issues receive greater attention and how their presentation can influence public understanding. The discussion also highlighted how media institutions, digital platforms, and power relations shape the way global events are covered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The discussion further encouraged students to approach global news through critical media literacy. Abdul Razaque emphasized the importance of comparing information across sources, examining the evidence behind media claims, and recognizing how framing can affect the interpretation of an issue. Students were also encouraged to consider perspectives that may be absent from a particular coverage. This critical approach was connected to the ethical responsibilities of journalism, particularly the need to provide accurate and contextual information when reporting issues that involve different countries and communities. Such considerations are essential in understanding how media coverage can influence audiences\u2019 perceptions of global events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Coordinator of the Undergraduate Communication Science Program at Universitas Negeri Jakarta, Dr. Dini Safitri, S.Sos., M.Si., CPR, stated, \u201cThe Globalization Issues course is one of the program\u2019s dynamic courses, featuring guest lecturers from various countries. Through these sessions, students are exposed to diverse perspectives and gain broader insights into global issues.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through this guest lecture, Undergraduate Communication Science students gained a broader perspective on the relationship between global issues and world media. The exchange with an international academic encouraged students to engage with different perspectives and strengthened their ability to critically assess information in an increasingly interconnected media environment. The activity also reflects the role of higher education in creating learning experiences that connect academic knowledge with developments beyond the national context, in line with the broader goal of providing meaningful and quality education under SDG 4.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
