Department of Sociology at Universitas Negeri Jakarta (UNJ) was officially founded in 2003 based on the rector’s license and now has become one of the favorite study program in Public University at Jakarta. Department of Sociology is under the auspices of the Faculty of Social Sciences, Universitas Negeri Jakarta.
The Sociology Study Program at Universitas Negeri Jakarta, initially part of the Sociology Department and known as the “Development Sociology Program”, began operating independently in 2003 under the approval of the UNJ Rector. In 2004, it received legal authorization from the Ministry of National Education, Directorate General of Higher Education, focusing on the field of social development. Following the 2014 regulation eliminating department names and introducing study programs, the Sociology study Program separated from the Sociology Education Study Program. Subsequently, the university, through the Rector’s Decree in 2017, changed the program’s name from Development Sociology to simply “Sociology” to align with national standards. This restructuring necessitated improvements in curriculum and administration, ultimately leading to the formulation of the Sociology Program’s vision and mission.
