Visiting Scolar Sestern Sydney University

Jakarta, 30/11/2022.  In preparation for internationalization, the Faculty of Social Sciences of Universitas Negeri Jakarta held a Visiting Scholar activity by inviting Dr. Jan A. Ali from Western Sydney University, Australia.

Visiting Scholar activities began with a Focus Group Discussion on the topic of Publication for Early Career Academics and Postgraduate Students, held on Tuesday, November 29, 2022 in room 212 of the Faculty of Social Sciences.

This FGD activity was opened by the Deputy Dean for Academic Affairs, Firdaus Wajdi, PhD and attended by lecturers in the Faculty of Social Sciences. Firdaus Wajdi, PhD expressed his gratitude for the presence of visiting scholar, Dr. Jan Ali from Western Sydney University and hoped that this FGD could equip FIS UNJ lecturers with skills for publication. In addition, this FGD is also expected to stimulate cooperation or collaboration between academics from the Faculty of Social Sciences, State University of Jakarta and Western Sydney University.

In his presentation, Dr. Jan. A Ali emphasized the importance of publishing in English for academics.  In addition, Dr. Jan Ali also explained the importance of applying critical thinking in preparing publication drafts.  The speaker was pleased to share his experience as a book author in an international publisher, as well as a writer and reviewer in reputable international journals.

The second activity in the framework of this visiting scholar is a guest lecturer held on Wednesday, November 29, 2022 in GDS room 1007 (smart class) with students of the Faculty of Social Sciences, State University of Jakarta. On this occasion, Dr. Jan Ali elaborated on the development of Islam and Sufism in Western countries with a focus on Australia. Indonesian Muslims, especially Muslims from Makassar, have a role in the development of Islam in Australia. In 2021, Muslims in Australia amounted to 3.2% of the total Australian population. Muslims in Australia have religious expressions including Sufism.

This visiting scholar activity was closed with a friendly gathering with the dean, lecturers, and education staff of the Faculty of Social Sciences, State University of Jakarta. The Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, Prof. Dr. Sarkadi, M.Si., supports and hopes that this visiting scholar activity will be continued with international teaching and research collaboration activities within the Faculty of Social Sciences in order to prepare double degrees and support the internationalization process of Universitas Negeri Jakarta.
