Jakarta, (10/02/2025) – Taking place in room 212, Faculty of Social Sciences and Law building, Universitas Negeri Jakarta. Dr. Sunny Lie Owens was present at Universitas Negeri Jakarta to officially open the Fullbright Scholar activity. This activity was attended by the Dean, Vice Deans, and also the lecturers from the Communication Science Program at Universitas Negeri Jakarta. Dr. Sunny, an academic from the United States of America, was present as the main speaker and will teach the Culture Communication and Critical Theory course for the next one semester.
The event was opened by the Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Law, Mr. Firdaus Wajdi, Ph.D., who expressed great hope for Dr. Sunny’s presence on campus. “We are very happy and proud to be part of this program. Dr. Sunny’s presence is expected to provide new insights and enrich students’ knowledge in cultural communication studies,” he said.
The activity then continued with remarks by the Coordinator of the UNJ Communication Science Program, Dr. Dini Safitri, S.Sos., M.Si., CPR., who introduced the lecturers of the Communication Study Program and their fields of study. Dr. Dini also shared positive expectations in this collaborative activity, “I hope Dr. Sunny’s presence will make a good collaborative activity and provide new insights for the Cultural Communication studies in Communication Science UNJ,” she said.
Dr. Sunny then gave a speech starting with a brief introduction. She shared her life journey as a Chinese-Indonesian from Singkawang who continued her education in the United States since the age of 18. She also shared her enthusiasm for carrying out the mandate from the US government to teach Culture Communication on this campus, “I came to study with you, but I also carry out a mandate from the US government to teach Cultural Communication courses. I will be here for one semester, hold workshops, and do teaching activities here.”
In the discussion session, Dr. Sunny answered various questions asked by lecturers and also Communication Science students of Universitas Negeri Jakarta, she also expressed her expectations for lecture activities in the next semester, “My expectation for students is that they show up and participate. In my class, there are no wrongs, just tell me whats in your mind. Be American and say whatever in your mind. I want an interaction, discussion, and engagement in my class.”
In closing, Dr. Sunny gave a message for the younger generation to stay curious, don’t dismiss because you don’t know, or you don’t care, don’t be scared to try learning a new thing. The activity ended with a documentation session with Dr. Sunny, the lecturers, and students of UNJ Communication Science.
