S-1 Communication Science Students and Lecturer Shine at A Focus Group Discussion International Community Engagement FISH UNJ and Edith Cowan University

Jakarta, July 1, 2025 – The Faculty of Social Sciences and Law (FISH) at Universitas Negeri Jakarta in collaboration with Edith Cowan University, Australia, held a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) on the Development of International Community Engagement. The event took place on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, from 10:00 to 11:30 WIB in Room 212, FISH UNJ.

This FGD served as a platform to discuss strategies, challenges, and opportunities for enhancing international community service programs. The event was attended by faculty members, researchers, and students from both institutions, aiming to foster stronger global partnerships and impactful community initiatives.

During the FGD, participants shared their unique takeaways from the program, highlighting the valuable lessons and new perspectives gained. Many expressed overwhelmingly positive feedback regarding their overall experience at UNJ, citing the enriching cultural exchange and hands-on learning opportunities.

Looking ahead, both universities expressed a strong commitment to fostering this collaborative spirit. There are ongoing discussions and efforts to establish the ECU student visit to UNJ as an annual event, solidifying a long-term partnership focused on academic exchange and community engagement. A significant portion of the discussion also revolved around the transformative impact of community service on the students’ thinking. Participants articulated how their involvement in community outreach initiatives led to a deeper understanding of societal needs and a broadened worldview.

The successful and highly respected collaboration between the Faculty of Social Sciences and Law (FISH) at Universitas Negeri Jakarta (UNJ) and Edith Cowan University owes much to the invaluable contributions of several dedicated lecturers from the S-1 Communication Science study program. We extend our sincere appreciation to our Communication Sciences Lecturer; Dr. Dini Safitri, S.Sos., M.Si., CPR., Dr. E. Nugrahaeni Prananingrum, M.Si., CICS., Dr. M. Fikri Akbar, S.I.Kom, M.Si, M.M., Sandy Allifiansyah, S.I.Kom., M.A., Ph.D. Their ongoing dedication continues to strengthen the bonds between our institutions and create enriching opportunities for our students.

A special highlight of the event was the active involvement of three S-1 Communication Science students from batch 2024: Azzahra Aurelia Rohman, Muhamad Raflino, and Nadine Berangere Argubi. Representing the S-1 Communication Science Study Program, these students made significant contributions to the discussion by sharing their insights on effective communication strategies for international community engagement and the role of youth in driving social change.

Their participation not only showcased the excellence and dynamism of the S-1 Communication Science program at FISH UNJ but also underscored the importance of student engagement in international academic collaborations. The ideas and perspectives were highly appreciated by participants from both universities, further strengthening the reputation of the Communication Science program as a leader in fostering global-minded, socially responsible graduates.

Dr. Dini Safitri, S.Sos., M.Si., CPR., the Coordinator of the S-1 Communication Science Study Program stated, “This Focus Group Discussion is a great initiative, as it provides an opportunity for the faculty and study program to collaborate with Edith Cowan University. If given the chance, the Communication Science Study Program at UNJ plans to organize an international community service activity together with Edith Cowan University in July 2026.”

After the FGD, the participants from both universities enjoy their special lunch at Restoran Sederhana. It’s a great opportunity for Edith Cowan University students to experience the rich and authentic flavors of West Sumatran cuisine. Lastly, the day ends with UNJ campus walking tour. The FGD marks a new milestone in FISH UNJ’s efforts to expand its international network and develop innovative community service programs with global impact.
